IMR is calling for papers to be introduced and discussed at the 43rd Annual Convention of Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies being held November 17–20, 2011, in Washington.

The theme of the 2011 Convention is “Authorities.” 

IMR is accepting submissions concerning such subjects as property rights and differential treatment of entrepreneurs by Russian authorities. Graduate students and faculty members from law and business schools, other scholars, even practicing lawyers and entrepreneurs are invited to submit papers, whether in the form of an article, an analytical research project or the like, using publicly available information on such legal matters as the ongoing case in the Khamovnichesky District Court of the city of Moscow on the criminal charges brought by the General Prosecution Office of the Russian Federation against Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev, former top managers of the Yukos Oil Company. Unfortunately, this case is not the only one in which the state’s power of law enforcement is used for the purposes other than the administration of justice. There are many others—for example, the matter of Hermitage Capital Fund and the tragic saga of its lawyer, Sergey Magnitsky, who died in pre-trial custody at a Moscow prison, or the treatment of the principals of Soyuzplodimport, owners of the Stolichnaya vodka brand. 

Authors can select any criminal law, criminal procedure, or interdisciplinary aspect(s) of one or more of the cases, provided that sufficient case materials pertaining to indictments, court records, and verdicts are available for academic research and analysis.

IMR is prepared to cover travel/accommodation expenses for panelists, and will consider providing a scholarship to the author of the best paper on the subject.
