Lombard Freid Gallery
is pleased to announce a one-time event
for the benefit of the Pussy Riot Feminist Art Collective
Monday, September 10, from 6-10 pm
518 W 19th Street, Manhattan, NY
All proceeds from the event will go to assisting the families and defense fund of the jailed band members. Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased here or at the door.
Three members of Pussy Riot, Nadejda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Ekaterina Samutsevich, were unjustly sentenced to two years in prison for a 30-second anti-Putin performance in Moscow’s main cathedral. The trial and sentencing of these young women has been widely covered in the Russian and foreign media, as previously discussed by IMR in Pussy Riot: A Cause Célèbre.
The event of September 10th will feature five original videos of guerilla punk performances by Pussy Riot shot at various Moscow locations. The Benefit will provide a platform for important voices to be heard from the contemporary arts community advocating for the women’s release. Throughout the evening, invited musicians, artists and writers will be reading statements in defense of the arrested band members. Institute of Modern Russia has already expressed its unequivocal support for the international campaign to free the young women.
The Pussy Riot videos provide a deeper context for understanding the political actions of the feminist collective. Their lyrics are filled deep social commentary, sharp condemnation of Russia’s current political and religious leadership, and protest against the growing abuses of human rights including the imprisonment of ordinary citizens rallying against the government’s unjust behavior.
Let your voice be heard on Monday, September 10.
