At the end of September, the Institute of Modern Russia launched a series of guest lectures focusing on Russian politics and foreign relations. The first lecture was delivered at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.
On October 6, the Legatum Institute will host a presentation of Vladimir Soloviev’s report titled “Moldova. The Failing Champion of European Integration.” This report was published in partnership with the Institute of Modern Russia and launched at the National Endowment for Democracy in Washington, DC on July 28, 2014.
On September 22, the Institute of Modern Russia relaunched its corporate website, imrussia.org, and updated its logo. Substantial changes were made to the website layout, structure, and navigation, as well as its mobile version.
On July 28, the Legatum Institute and the Institute of Modern Russia presented papers on transitional issues faced by Ukraine, Georgia, and Moldova. The forum featured the reflections of two British journalists, Peter Pomerantsev and Oliver Bullough, as well as those of IMR’s editor-in-chief Olga Khvostunova. Anne Applebaum, director of the Legatum Institute’s Transitions Forum, moderated the discussion. The event took place at the National Endowment for Democracy’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.
On July 10, the Institute of Modern Russia hosted the launch of a new interactive website titled “Patriotism,” which features the work of photographer Misha Friedman on the meaning of patriotism in today’s Russia. The launch took place at Fridman Gallery, located in New York City, and introductory remarks were made by IMR President Pavel Khodorkovsky.
On July 28, the Legutum Institute and the Institute of Modern Russia will present three papers on the transition issues of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova. The event will take place at the National Endowment for Democracy’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.
On July 17, the Legatum Institute will host a presentation of Oliver Bullough’s forthcoming report titled “Looting Ukraine: the East, the West and the Corruption of a country.” This report is published in partnership with the Institute of Modern Russia and will also be launched at the National Endowment for Democracy in Washington, DC on 28 July 2014.
On June 3, Pushkin House in London hosted a screening of They Chose Freedom, a documentary film on the Soviet dissident movement. Following the screening, legendary Russian dissident Vladimir Bukovsky and the film’s director, IMR Senior Advisor Vladimir Kara-Murza, discussed the historical lessons of confronting totalitarianism and the present-day situation in Russia.
On May 29, the Ukrainian-American human rights organization Razom held a panel discussion entitled “The Evolving Crisis in Ukraine: Its Global Implications” at New York University (NYU). Participants in the panel included coauthors of Razom’s report on the Ukraine crisis; American analyst and columnist Paul A. Goble; and representatives of the Permanent Missions of Lithuania and Georgia to the United Nations. Mary Holland, Director of the Graduate Legal Skills Program and Research Scholar at NYU School of Law, moderated.
On June 3, 2014, in London, Pushkin House and the Institute of Modern Russia will present the English-language version of They Chose Freedom, a documentary film on the history of the Soviet dissident movement. Following the screening, there will be a discussion with Vladimir Bukovsky, one of the leading Soviet-era dissidents.
