On October 2, former political prisoner Vladimir Pereverzin presented his book entitled Hostage: The Story of a Yukos Manager at the Brooklyn Public Library in New York. The event was organized with the support of the Institute of Modern Russia.
On October 15th, the Institute of Modern Russia, the Legatum Institute, and the International Forum for Democratic Studies at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) will hold a panel discussion on the recent political developments in Russia. The discussion will be based on “Russia: A Postmodern Dictatorship?”, a paper by Peter Pomerantsev.
The meeting allows for the discussion of a wide spectrum of problems and threats facing Russian society. Among them are politically motivated prosecutions and the existence of political prisoners (including internationally recognized prisoners of conscience); government control over major media outlets; violations of the right to free elections; violations of the freedom of peaceful assembly; pressure on nongovernmental organizations; the absence of public oversight of law enforcement agencies; and the impunity of government officials implicated in corruption and human rights abuses.
On June 11, Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov spoke on Capitol Hill at a forum entitled “Seven Democrats and Putin: Human Rights in Russia Ahead of the G8 Summit.” The event was co-hosted by the Institute of Modern Russia and the Foreign Policy Initiative.
On June 5, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) group in the European Parliament held a seminar on Russian political prisoners. The event took place on the eve of the “Bolotnaya Square” trial, widely viewed as politically motivated. The participants stressed the urgent need for the EU to take a firm stand with regard to human rights abuses in Russia.
On June 3, the Institute of Modern Russia launched a new design for its corporate website, imrussia.org. Substantial changes were made in both website layout and its structure. Our new design allows a clearer display of IMR’s projects, conferences, and other events in a more detailed and distinctive way, efficiently providing you with the latest IMR organizational news and activities.
On June 11, the Institute of Modern Russia and the Foreign Policy Initiative will co-host a Capitol Hill forum on the human rights situation in Russia. The event, which comes a week before the meeting between Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin at the G8 summit in Northern Ireland, will feature Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov.
On March 4, the Institute of Modern Russia, the Foreign Policy Initiative, and Freedom House will hold a forum on the future of U.S.-EU-Russia relations on Capitol Hill. Speakers include Mikhail Kasyanov, Ludmila Alekseeva, Sen. Ben Cardin, Guy Verhofstadt, Dmitri Gudkov, Pavel Khodorkovsky, Kristiina Ojuland and others.
February 21, 2013, marked the 400th anniversary of the House of Romanov. In honor of this date, Columbia University held a conference entitled “In Search of Empire,” which was co-sponsored by the Institute of Modern Russia.
