The Institute of Modern Russia is launching a new project, “Russia under Putin,” to mark the 20th anniversary of Vladimir Putin’s first election as president.
On October 28, IMR and the Atlantic Council co-hosted a panel discussion on the prospects of the Russian protest movement. Panelists included director the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center, Ambassador John Herbst, IMR’s director Olga Khvostunova and Russian journalist Ksenia Kirillova. On December 8, Russia’s most recognized and revered human rights veteran Lyudmila Alekseeva passed away at the age of 91. She dedicated her entire life to a noble and selfless fight for the freedom of her country and its people.
On June 14, 2018, IMR and CSIS held a panel discussion on the current downward spiral in tensions between Moscow and Washington. Participants in the discussion included former Russian foreign minister Andrei Kozyrev, Vice Chairman of Open Russia Vladimir Kara-Murza, Russian political strategist Vitali Shkliarov, and Free Russia Foundation president Natalia Arno. Senior Adviser and Director of the Russia and Eurasia Program at CSIS Olga Oliker moderated the discussion.
On February 27, the third anniversary of the assassination of Boris Nemtsov, the Institute of Modern Russia is publicly releasing the English-subtitled version of “Nemtsov,” a documentary about the leader of the Russian opposition directed by his friend and colleague Vladimir Kara-Murza.
Roskomnadzor blacklisted Open Russia online resources upon the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office. According to the regulator’s website, a number of corresponding domain names have been blocked on December 11, 2017, citing Article 15.3 of the Federal Law No. 149-FZ “On Information,” which establishes the procedure that limits access to extremist information.
On December 5, IMR’s Vladimir Kara-Murza spoke with Leon Aron, director of Russian Studies at the American Enterprise Institute, on Russia’s upcoming presidential election, in which Vladimir Putin is viewed as the prohibitive favorite. Still, many issues continue to concern Russia watchers in the West.
